Care of Your Cast
Synthetic Fiberglass Casts
Your cast will harden immediately and achieve maximum strength
in about 20 minutes and will dry out in one to two hours.
Although fiberglass casts are very durable, you still must
be careful not to participate in activities which may cause
damage to your cast. Fiberglass casts can develop rough edges
on the outside which may snag clothing. You may use an emery
board to lightly sand these edges until they are smooth. You
may also fold a strip of moleskin (such as Dr. Scholl’s)
around the edge. You can find moleskin with the foot care
products at the supermarket or drug store.
Do's and Don'ts
DON’T get the cast wet.
Cast guards are available at larger pharmacies and medical
supply stores. An alternative protective covering is a durable
plastic bag. Completely cover the cast with the bag and hold
it in place with tape or a large rubber band. Make certain
the rubber band holds the bag snug, but does not cut off circulation.
Wrap a washcloth or towel on the top edge of the bag, after
you have sealed it.
If the cast should still get wet, it may be dried with a hairdryer set on the coolest setting for 30 minutes to 2 hours, or until the cast is dry. If the cast and padding are allowed to remain damp or wet, serious skin problems could develop.
DON’T attempt to remove the cast yourself.
DON’T put anything down inside the cast! This includes but is not limited to hangers, rulers, pens, pencils, knives, coins and powders. If you experience itching, use a hairdryer set on the cool setting to blow air into the cast. The forced air will relieve most discomfort due to itching or dampness inside the cast.
DO elevate the cast above the level of your heart. This helps to reduce swelling and relieve discomfort.
DO exercise your fingers or toes. Wiggling fingers or toes back and forth will improve circulation; reduce swelling and aid in the recovery function when the cast is removed.
Elevation Above the Level of the Heart
is for 15-30 Minutes is Recommended
1. For the first 48 hours after an injury.
2. For increased pain beyond the limits of your pain reliever.
3. If the cast feels TOO TIGHT.
4. If you experience persistent NUMBNESS OR TINGLING in the
arm or leg.
***IF YOU CONTINUE TO EXPERIENCE THE ABOVE SYMPTOMS DESPITE PROPER ELEVATION, PLEASE CONTACT THE OFFICE THAT APPLIED YOUR CAST.***
